When the Yoga enters into deeper states of trance, the heat of the Kundalini begins to course through the body, the  subtle body is activated and the brain experiences a reverberating natural silence. The Yogin experiences a sense of purity, rejuvenation and alertness within.   At this point, one may hear subtle sounds in the ear, smell burning incense or floral fragrances (which have non-worldly origin) and gain sight into the occult worlds.  The sounds which the Yogin hears tend to vary depending on the inner plane of consciousness to which one is currently attuned.  This post is a collection of these subtle sounds as noted in various ancient scriptures.  As we see, there is lot of similarity in these descriptions.

The Yoga Upanishads

The Yoga Upanishads are a subset of the Upanishads which contain various techniques and experiences of Yoga.   The following passage is from the Hamsa-Upanishad :
It (Nada, sound) is (begun to be heard as) of ten kinds. The first is Chini (like the sound of that word); the second is Chini-Chini; the third is the sound of bell; the fourth is that of conch; the fifth is that of Tantiri (lute); the sixth is that sound of Tala (cymbals); the seventh is that of flute; the eighth is that of Bheri (drum); the ninth is that of Mridanga (double drum); and the tenth is that of clouds (viz., thunder). He may experience the tenth without the first nine sounds (through the initiation of a Guru).
And this is from the Nadabindu-Upanishad (verses 31-41)
The Yogi should always listen to the sound (nada) in the interior of his right ear. This sound, when constantly practiced, will drown every sound (dhvani from outside …. By persisting … the sound will be heard subtler and subtler. At first, it will be like what is produced by the ocean (jaladhi), the  cloud (jimuta), the kettle-drum (bheri), and the water-fall (nirjhara) . … A little later it will be like the sound produced by a tabor (mardala, or small drum), a big bell (ghanta), and a military drum (kahala); and finally like the sound of the tinkling bell (kinkin), the bamboo-flute (vamsa), the harp (vina) and the bee (bhramara).
(Guy Beck, Sonic Theology, pp 93-103)
The Darsana-Upanishad (6.36.-38) describes the sounds heard when the consciousness becomes centered in the Brahmarandhra (anterior fontanelle), located in the top-center region of the head:
When air (prana) enters the Brahmarandhra, nada (sound) is also produced there. resembling at first the sound of a conchblast (sankha-dhvani) and like the thunder-clap (megha-dhvani) in the middle; and when the air has reached the middle of the head, like the roaring of a mountain cataract (giri-prasravana)  Thereafter, 0 great wise one! the Atman, mightily pleased, will actually appear in front of thee. Then there will be the ripeness of the knowledge of Atman(Divine) from Yoga and the disowning by the Yogi of worldly existence.
(Guy Beck, Sonic Theology, pp 93-103)

The Shiva-Samhita

This revelation comes from the Shiva-Samhita
Let him close the ears with his thumbs …. This is my most beloved Yoga. From practicing this gradually, the Yogi begins to hear mystic sounds (nadas).  The first sound is like the hum of the honey-intoxicated bee (matta-bhrnga), next that of a flute  (venu), then of a harp (vina); after this, by the gradual practice of Yoga, the destroyer of the darkness of the world, he hears the sounds of ringing bells (ghanta) then sounds like roar of thunder (megha).
(Guy Beck, Sonic Theology, pp 93-103)

Theosophical texts

In her book The Voice of the SilenceH.P.Blavatksy elucidates on the sounds perceived during increasing absorption in trance.  This is an excerpt:
Before thou set’st thy foot upon the ladder’s upper rung, the ladder of the mystic sounds, thou hast to hear the voice of thy inner GOD* in seven manners.
  • The first is like the nightingale’s sweet voice chanting a song of parting to its mate.
  • The second comes as the sound of a silver cymbal of the Dhyanis, awakening the twinkling stars.
  • The next is as the plaint melodious of the ocean-sprite imprisoned in its shell.
  • And this is followed by the chant  of the Vina.
  • The fifth like sound of bamboo-flute shrills in thine ear.
  • It changes next into a trumpet-blast.
  • The last vibrates like the dull rumbling of a thunder-cloud.
  • The seventh swallows all the other sounds. They die, and then are heard no more.
(H.P. Blavatsky, Voice of the Silence, Chapter 1 – online)

Hatha Yoga Pradipika

In the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the following verses (verse number is indicated in parentheses) detail the subtle sounds which are heard.
  • (69) When the Brahma knot (in the heart) is pierced through by Pranayama, then a sort of happiness is experienced in the vacuum of the heart, and the anahat sounds, like various tinkling sounds of ornaments, are heard in the body.
  • (72) By this means the Vishnu knot (in the throat) is pierced which is indicated by highest pleasure experienced, And then the Bheri sound (like the beating of a kettle drain) is evolved in the vacuum in the throat.
  • (73) In the third stage, the sound of a drum is known to arise in the Sunya(space) between the eyebrows, and then the Vayu goes to the Mahasunya, which is the home of all the siddhis.
  • (75) When the Rudra knot is pierced and the air enters the seat of the Lord (the space between the eyebrows), then the perfect sound like that of a flute is produced.
  • (84) In the first stage, the sounds are surging, thundering like the beating of kettle drums and jingling ones. In the intermediate stage, they are like those produced by conch,Mridanga, bells, &c.
  • (85) In the last stage, the sounds resemble those from tinklets, flute, Veena, bee, &c. These various kinds of sounds are heard as being produced in the body.
(Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Vol 4)

Sri Aurobindo’s Savitri

Sri Aurobindo discusses these subtle sounds in his poem Savitri.  The first excerpt alludes to a “cosmic murmur” which the Yogi hears.  This is traditionally known as the Anahata sound.  See the next passage in which Ramakrishna discusses the cosmic murmur or Anahata sound.   The second excerpt is a list of sounds (flute, cricket’s rash, anklet bells, temple gong, bee’s croon) which are heard in increasing states of absorption.
As one drawn to his lost spiritual home
Feels now the closeness of a waiting love,
Into a passage dim and tremulous
That clasped him in from day and night’s pursuit,
He travelled led by a mysterious sound.
A murmur multitudinous and lone,
All sounds it was in turn, yet still the same.
A hidden call to unforeseen delight
(Savitri, Book 2, Canto 14, The World-Soul, p 289)
In the summoning voice of one long-known, well-loved,
But nameless to the unremembering mind,
It led to rapture back the truant heart.
The immortal cry ravished the captive ear.
Then, lowering its imperious mystery,
It sank to a whisper circling round the soul.
It seemed the yearning of a lonely flute
That roamed along the shores of memory
And filled the eyes with tears of longing joy.
A cricket’s rash and fiery single note,
It marked with shrill melody night’s moonless hush
And beat upon a nerve of mystic sleep
Its high insistent magical reveille.
A jingling silver laugh of anklet bells
Travelled the roads of a solitary heart;
Its dance solaced an eternal loneliness:
An old forgotten sweetness sobbing came.
Or from a far harmonious distance heard
The tinkling pace of a long caravan
It seemed at times, or a vast forest’s hymn,
The solemn reminder of a temple gong,
A bee-croon honey-drunk in summer isles
Ardent with ecstasy in a slumbrous noon,
Or the far anthem of a pilgrim sea.
An incense floated in the quivering air,
A mystic happiness trembled in the breast
As if the invisible Beloved had come
Assuming the sudden loveliness of a face
And close glad hands could seize his fugitive feet
And the world change with the beauty of a smile.
(Savitri, Book 2, Canto 14, The World-Soul, p 290)

Ramakrishna Paramahansa

This dialogue is from The Gospel of Ramakrishna, where Ramakrishna Paramahansa describes the mellifluous Anahata sound which reverberates through the Universe.  This is analogous but not the same as  the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation.
Prankrishna (to the Master): “Sir, what is the Anahata sound?”
Master: “It is a spontaneous sound constantly going on by itself. It is the sound of the Pranava, Om. It originates in the Supreme Brahman and is heard by yogis. People immersed in worldliness do not hear it. A yogi alone knows that this sound originates both from his navel and from the Supreme Brahman resting on the Ocean of Milk

The indigo child is here to bring us closer to our true essence. We think our minds are separate because of our bodies. These children know differently. A true indigo travels comfortably between worlds usually at night when we think they're asleep.
Our thoughts and feelings are not our own. The truth is, we have forgotten who we are and how our minds are connected to each other.Indigos remember and have an inner knowing that far exceeds our psychic abilities.
Having said this, not all children born since about 1980 are indigos. Many brought major challenges from previous lifetimes they're still working through. But once the lessons are learned and the patterns forgiven, they will join the ranks of the cosmic caring indigo.

"The intricate inner workings of our DNA are changing...Brain-wave relationships are spontaneously moving into higher vibrational patterning as the electromagnetic fields within our DNA. Because of this, our brains are working together as cohesive units of consciousness. That means humanity is becoming more aware and moving toward becoming sentient beings – aware of everything all at once all of the time.”

So what happened to cause us to lose touch with our inner knowing?
Put simply, thousands of years ago we began to "think" instead of "feel." Our ability to tap into the collective consciousness is still within us, we’ve just forgotten how to use it. The ego became our ruler, holding us back by relying on memories to make our decisions. With past as our guide, we gave our power to the ego, which made us fearful. The intellect caused us to lose our connection to the collective consciousness, making us feel alone.
Some adults have been able to gain at least a part of this former knowing. They in turn are giving birth to children who remember how the collective consciousness works and they are using it. The indigo offspring is their descendant.

Where did the term “Indigo Child” come from?
Nancy Ann Tappe, a teacher and counselor, studied the human auric field, otherwise known as their electromagnetic field. The field surrounds every living thing. She even wrote a book about it called "Understanding Your Life Through Color."
Through colors in the aura, she instituted a shockingly accurate and revealing way to psychologically profile a person using her new auric color method. The signs of an indigo child actually began even as early as in the 1950s with a few people. What she noticed was that 80 percent of the children born after 1980 had a new deep blue colored auric field. She called this new color "indigo".

What are the behavioral patterns of Indigos?
  1. They are born feeling and knowing they are special and should be revered.
  2. An indigo knows they belong here as they are and expect you to realize it as well.
  3. These children are more confident and have a higher sense of self-worth.
  4. Absolute authority, the kind with no choices, negotiation, or input from them does not sit well. The educational system is a good example.
  5. Some of the rules we so carefully followed as children seem silly to them and they fight them.
  6. Rigid ritualistic systems are considered archaic to an indigo child. They feel everything should be given creative thought.
  7. They are insightful and often have a better idea of method then what has been in place for years. This makes them seem like "system busters."
  8. Adults often view an indigo as anti-social unless they are with other indigos. Often they feel lost and misunderstood, which causes them to go within.
  9. The old control methods like, "Wait till your father gets home," have no affect on these children.
  10. The fulfillment of their personal needs is important to them, and they will let you know.

Are you or your children an indigo?

These are the characteristics of an indigo as stated in The Care and Feeding of Your Indigo           Child:
  • Strong willed
  • Born in 1978 or later
  • Headstrong
  • Creative, with an artistic flair for music, jewelry making, poetry, etc.
  • Prone to addictions
  • An "old soul" as if they’re 13 going on 43
  • Intuitive or psychic, possibly with a history of seeing angels or deceased people
  • An isolationist, either through aggressive acting-out or through fragile introversion
  • Independent and proud, even if they’re constantly asking you for money
  • Possess a deep desire to help the world in a big way
  • Wavers between low self-esteem and grandiosity
  • Bores easily
  • Has probably been diagnosed as having ADD or ADHD
  • Prone to insomnia, restless sleep, nightmares, or difficulty/fear of falling asleep
  • Has a history of depression, or even suicidal thoughts or attempts
  • Looks for real, deep, and lasting friendships
  • Easily bonds with plants or animals.

Here are some do’s and don’ts to help you get your own Reiki practice off the ground:

Do find a place to set up your practice. If zoning laws allow you to have a Reiki practice at home, perfect. You’ll need a room that has both privacy and easy access for those clients arriving in wheelchairs. If zoning laws do not permit you to have a Reiki practice at home, go somewhere else. There are many massage therapists, chiropractors, health spas, care givers, and the like, that will rent you space by the hour for a nominal fee. I do not recommend that you travel to a client’s home for a Reiki session unless you know the person. It’s a good idea to have another person there with you if you are working on a stranger for the first time.

Do volunteer at a local hospital, clinic, nursing home, hospice, etc. Every bit of experience you can give yourself is important.

Do set up a schedule for giving Reiki sessions. In your calendar mark both the dates and the times when you will be available. Do this even if you don’t have any clients yet. Remember, Reiki is energy healing … you are working with energy and you need to start building energy and intension around having your own Reiki clients. Do this in writing because as you write down your appointment availability into your calendar, you are creating an energetic link to the energy of having a Reiki practice.

Do invest in a good bodywork table as soon as possible. You can find good deals online and on ebay.com. You could call your local massage school …. they may have a used model they are willing to sell you.

Don’t give rushed Reiki sessions or deliver Reiki to just the symptom. This doesn’t work. Always ask the client permission before beginning the Reiki session … follow proper hygienic procedures, and maintain confidentiality. Conduct each Reiki session thoroughly. Always follow up with your clients. Treat all clients with a professional demeanor … even friends and family members. For each client that you meet for the first time, remember that his or her impression of you begins to form with your first conversation. We cover all of these topics in our classes at The John Harvey Gray Center for Reiki Healing.

Do purchase good professional liability insurance. Your home insurance may not protect you should a client have an accident while in your home. It is easy for one to slip and fall on stairs, icy or not. Some organizations such as iarp.org have very inexpensive premiums that you easily can pay for with the income from one or two sessions. The peace of mind of having a good policy is well worth the premium.

Don’t spend hundreds of dollars in advertising. This is not necessary. Just tell your friends, family, co-workers … essentially everyone you meet, that you are giving Reiki sessions. Offer the sessions for free or for a small donation in order to cover expenses. If possible, get business cards and prepare a simple brochure so that you can pass them out to your new clients. More elaborate forms of marketing and networking are important later on, after you gain some experience, but not as a first step.

Ask your clients to tell their friends about your Reiki sessions. Ask each client who liked the session(s) to write a testimonial. Having a portfolio of great Reiki testimonials will serve you far better than expensive ads. Their friends (who could potentially become your clients) will want to know what it was like. How well did you communicate and work with the client … both in the before Reiki interview, during, and after the Reiki session? What was the actual Reiki treatment like? Only your Reiki client can answer these questions. Your own performance during the Reiki session will provide the answers.Don’t worry about charging a fee for your Reiki sessions in the beginning. It’s much more important for you to get the practice. Every client who comes to you is helping you to become a better Reiki practitioner. Each one provides you the opportunity to practice and gain more experience. Once you have a track record of success with these Reiki clients, paying clients will come automatically. If you wish, ask for a small donation to cover expenses. Remember, this will pay off in the end.

Below is an excellent starting point to learn how to harness the power of medicinal plants. This is only a small sample, of course, and once you get your feet wet, you’ll likely be inspired to explore more and more uses for these healing wonders.
1. Ginger
Ginger is one spice that I recommend keeping on hand in your kitchen at all times. Not only is it a wonderful addition to your cooking (especially paired with garlic) but it also has enough medicinal properties to fill several books.
Ginger is best known for its antinausea effects but also has broad-spectrum antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, and anti-parasitic properties, to name just several of its more than 40 scientifically confirmed pharmacological actions. It is anti-inflammatory, making it valuable for pain relief for joint pain, menstrual pain, headaches, and more.
The pain-relieving potential of ginger appears to be far-reaching. Along with help for muscle and joint pain, ginger has been found to reduce the severity of migraine headaches as well as the migraine medication Sumatriptan – with fewer side effects.4
Ginger also shows promise for fighting cancer, diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, asthma, bacterial and fungal infections, and it is one of the best natural remedies available for motion sickness or nausea (from pregnancy or chemotherapy, for example).
Taking one gram of ginger daily may help reduce nausea and vomiting in pregnant women, or those with migraines and ginger has been shown to work better than a placebo in relieving morning sickness.5
Ginger is also a must-have if you struggle with indigestion, and it does more than simply relieve pain. Ginger contains powerful protein-digesting enzymes and helps to stimulate the emptying of your stomach without any negative effect, and it’s an antispasmodic agent, which may explain its beneficial effects on your intestinal tract.
Many people enjoy ginger tea on a regular basis, and this is one of the simplest ways to use it. Simply chop off a couple of inches of ginger root and let it steep in hot water for fresh ginger tea. I would advise against using it daily as it can lead to an allergy and is what happened to me about twenty years ago.
You can also peel the root using a paring knife and then slice it thinly (or grate it or mince it) to add to tea or cooked dishes. You can’t go wrong by adding ginger to stir fries or even your favorite homemade chicken soup. For serious issues, a natural health care provider can help you get the maximum therapeutic benefits of ginger.
2. Garlic
Eating a clove or two of fresh garlic a day may indeed keep the doctor away, in part because it has immune-boosting, antibacterial, antiviral, andanti-fungal effects. Many of garlic’s therapeutic effects are derived from its sulfur-containing compounds, such as allicin, which are also what give it its characteristic smell. In general, garlic’s benefits fall into four main categories:
  1. Reducing inflammation (reduces the risk of osteoarthritis and other disease associated with inflammation)
  2. Boosting immune function (antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antiparasitic properties)
  3. Improving cardiovascular health and circulation (protects against clotting, retards plaque, improves lipids, and reduces blood pressure)
  4. Toxic to at least 14 kinds of cancer cells (including brain, lung, breast, gastric, and pancreatic)
In addition, garlic may be effective against drug-resistant bacteria, and research has revealed that as allicin digests in your body, it produces sulfenic acid, a compound that reacts with dangerous free radicals faster than any other known compound.6 This is one of the reasons why I named garlic as one of the top seven anti-aging foods you can consume.
In order to get the health benefits, the fresh clove must be crushed or chopped in order to stimulate the release of an enzyme called alliinase, which in turn catalyzes the formation of allicin.
Allicin, in turn, rapidly breaks down to form a number of different organosulfur compounds. So to “activate” garlic’s medicinal properties, compress a fresh clove with a spoon prior to swallowing it, or put it through your juicer to add to your vegetable juice.
A single medium-size clove or two is usually sufficient and is well-tolerated by most people. The active ingredient, allicin, is destroyed within one hour of smashing the garlic, so garlic pills are virtually worthless. Black garlic, which is basically fermented garlic, and sprouted garlic may contain evenmore antioxidants than regular garlic.
3. Peppermint
Peppermint offers benefits to the respiratory system, including for coughs, colds, asthma, allergies, and tuberculosis. In terms of digestive health, peppermint oil capsules have been described as "the drug of first choice" in IBS patients,7 and peppermint oil is an effective alternative to drugs like Buscopan for reducing colonic spasms.8
It may also relax the muscles of your intestines, allowing gas to pass and easing abdominal pain. Try peppermint oil or leaves added to tea for gas relief. Inhaling the peppermint aroma may offer memory enhancement and stress relief, and peppermint oil acts as an expectorant and decongestant, and may help clear your respiratory tract.
Use peppermint essential oil as a cold rub on your chest or inhale it through a vaporizer to help clear nasal congestion and relieve cough and cold symptoms. Peppermint oil may also help relieve tension headache pain. For headache pain, try dabbing a few drops on your wrist or sprinkling a few drops on a cloth, then inhaling the aroma. You can also massage the oil directly onto your temples and forehead. Peppermint essential oil is ideal for muscle and chest rubs, headache pain, dental care, and aromatherapy. You can even add it to your homemade cleaning supplies for extra antimicrobial power and natural fragrance.
When selecting peppermint for your own use, the fresh leaves will impart a superior flavor to dried leaves (such as for use in tea). Look for fresh leaves that are green in color without any dark spots or yellowing. In addition to using fresh mint leaves in tea, you can add them to soups, fruit salad, or gazpacho. Additionally, it is really easy to grow peppermint yourself and the plant works as a highly effective deterrent to many insects that might invade your garden or your home.
4Lavender
Lavender oil has a chemically complex structure with over 150 active constituents. This oil is rich in esters, which are aromatic molecules with antispasmodic (suppressing spasms and pain), calming, and stimulating properties. The chief botanical constituents of lavender oil are linalyl acetate, linalool (a non-toxic terpene alcohol that has natural germicidal properties), terpinen-4-ol, and camphor. Other constituents in lavender oil that are responsible for its antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties include cis-ocimene, lavandulyl acetate, 1,8-cineole, limonene, and geraniol.
Lavender oil is known for its calming and relaxing properties, and has been used aromatherapeutically for alleviating insomnia, anxiety, depression, restlessness, dental anxiety, and stress. It has also been proven effective for nearly all kinds of ailments, from pain to infections.
I am particularly fascinated by lavender oil's potential in fighting antifungal-resistant skin and nail infections. Scientists from the University of Coimbra found that lavender oil is lethal to skin-pathogenic strains known as dermatophytes, as well as various Candida species.10 Lavender oil can also be used to:

  • Relieve pain. It can ease sore or tense muscles, joint pain and rheumatism, sprains, backache, and lumbago. Simply massage a small amount of lavender oil onto the affected area. Lavender oil may also help lessen pain following needle insertion.
  • Treat various skin disorders like acne, psoriasis, eczema, and wrinkles. It also helps form scar tissues, which may be essential in healing wounds, cuts, and burns. Lavender can also help soothe insect bites and itchy skin (lavender oil can help ward off mosquitoes and moths. It is actually used as an ingredient in some mosquito repellents).
  • Keep your hair healthy. It helps kill lice, lice eggs, and nits. The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database(NMCB) says that lavender is possibly effective for treating alopecia areata (hair loss), boosting hair growth by up to 44 percent after just seven months of treatment.11
  • Improve your digestion. This oil helps stimulate the mobility of your intestine and stimulates the production of bile and gastric juices, which may help treat stomach pain, indigestion, flatulence, colic, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Relieve respiratory disorders. Lavender oil can help alleviate respiratory problems like colds and flu, throat infections, cough, asthma, whooping cough, sinus congestion, bronchitis, tonsillitis, and laryngitis. It can be applied on your neck, chest, or back, or inhaled via steam inhalation or through a vaporizer.
  • Stimulate urine production, which helps restore hormonal balance, prevent cystitis (inflammation of the urinary bladder), and relieve cramps and other urinary disorders.
  • Improve your blood circulation. It helps lower elevated blood pressure levels and can be used for hypertension.
5. Thyme
Thyme is a fragrant herb that makes a wonderful addition to your cooking, in part because it is rich in antioxidants. Thyme contains health-boosting flavonoids including apigenin, naringenin, luteolin, and thymonin, and has been shown to protect and increase the percentage of healthy fats found in cell membranes. As reported by the George Mateljan Foundation:12 “In particular, the amount of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid) in brain, kidney, and heart cell membranes was increased after dietary supplementation with thyme.”
Thyme is also nutrient dense, containing vitamin C, vitamin A, iron, manganese, copper, and dietary fiber. When used in cooked dishes, thyme may also help inhibit glycation and the formation of dangerous advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in your food, making thyme a potential preventer of heart disease and premature aging. Due to thyme oil’s antibacterial, antispasmodic, antirheumatic, expectorant, hypertensive, and calming properties, it also has a long list of topical uses, including:
  • Home remedy – Thyme oil is used to relieve and treat problems like gout, arthritis, wounds, bites, and sores, water retention, menstrual and menopausal problems, nausea and fatigue, respiratory problems (like colds), skin conditions (oily skin and scars), athlete’s foot, hangovers, and even depression.
  • Aromatherapy oil – The oil can be used to stimulate the mind, strengthen memory and concentration, and calm the nerves.
  • Hair product – It is said that thyme oil can prevent hair loss. It is used as a treatment for the scalp and is added to shampoos and other hair products.
  • Skin product – Thyme oil can help tone aged skin and prevent acne outbreaks.
  • Mouthwashes and herbal rinses – Like peppermint, wintergreen, and eucalyptus oils, thyme oil is used to improve oral health.
  • Insecticide/insect repellent – Thyme oil can keep insects and parasites like mosquitoes, fleas, lice, and moths away.
6. Chamomile
Chamomile is most popular in tea form for use to calm upset stomach and help support restful sleep. Germany’s Commission E (a government organization) has even approved the use of chamomile for reducing swelling on your skin and fighting bacteria. Chamomile is a powerful anti-inflammatory that also has antibacterial, anti-spasmodic, anti-allergenic, muscle relaxant, and sedative properties. It is used to treat psoriasis, eczema, chickenpox, diaper rash, slow-healing wounds, abscesses, and gum inflammation,13 and according to Herb Wisdom may also be useful for the following conditions:14
“The oil serves many medicinal purposes, but one of the best-documented uses is for relaxation. The oil has a calming effect on people, and can be used to help induce sleep, ease frayed nerves, and promote a general sense of calmness and well being. It is great for those with nervousness or anxiety problems. Aside from having mental calming properties, chamomile is also good at relaxing sore muscles and tight joints.
It can ease menstrual cramps and back aches, as well as relax the digestive system to ease upset stomach or indigestion issues. When applied topically to the skin, it soothes redness and irritation. For this reason, it is a common ingredient in skincare. It also eliminates itchiness and is good for those with allergic reactions. Sometimes chamomile is used on rashes. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it can work to take down swelling caused by rashes or skin irritants.”
7. Dandelion
This flowering plant has traditionally been used as a liver tonic, useful for detoxification and improving liver function. Dandelion is known as a stimulant that is typically used for kidney and liver disorders. It is also traditionally used to reduce the side effects of prescription drugs, as well as to treat infections, gallbladder problems, water retention and swelling.15 Dandelion greens, which you can prepare simply by blanching them in boiling water for 20 seconds to help remove their bitter flavor (they can also be added to vegetable juice), contain many nutrients, including vitamin C, vitamin B6, thiamin, riboflavin, calcium, iron, potassium, and manganese. They are a particularly good source of vitamin A and may also have cancer-fighting properties.

If a physical form could demonstrate the benefit of even one recitation of OM AH HUNG VAJRA GURU PEMA SIDDHI HUNG, the entire earth would not be sufficient to contain the merit. All sentient beings who see, hear, or remember this mantra will definitely be established in the ranks of the masculine and feminine awareness-holders. If it is the case that these words of truth of
the Vajra Guru mantra do not accomplish for sentient beings what they wish to accomplish just as I havepromised, then I Pema Jungne, am truly deceiving sentient beings. But I have not deceived you, so you should practice according to my instructions.
Even if you are not able to recite the mantra for whatever reasons, you should mount it on the top of a victory banner, even when the wind touches it, and that wind touches sentient beings, it will free them without a doubt. Alternately, you may inscribe it in clay or carve it in stone. This will also guard the path upon which these syllables are placed and guard that region from malevolent effects. You may also write this mantra out in gold ink on dark blue paper and wear it as an amulet. When you die, if this amulet isburned with your corpse, rainbows will be seen and your consciousness will be transferred to the realms of Supreme Bliss. The benefits of writing out, reading or reciting this mantra defy any accurate measure and defy any standard measurement that could be applied. Having established this for the benefit of beings in the future, I am hiding this treasure. May it meet with a fortunate child of mine in the future who has good karma.
Samaya. Sealed. Sealed. Sealed.

Mantra shastra is a very deep and great science which, if understood correctly, can give one victory over the lower nature. It is a very ancient science and in previous ages people knew it well. Now, however, people’s faith in mantra shastra has diminished and the actual knowledge has become hidden to the point that anything is said in the name of mantra. It is therefore necessary to clarify this science for the sake of spiritual aspirants.

Origins of mantra

Mankind’s most ancient scriptures are the tantra shastras, and after the tantras, the Vedas took birth. Mantra shastra has come from the tantras. It was not written like ordinary books are written. The ancient sages had actual realization of mantra. When, in meditation, the rishis were able to rise to a very high level and transcend material consciousness, they heard cosmic sounds. These were called mantra. If you simply make up some syllables in your mind and repeat them, it is not mantra. When the rishis and munis, whose souls were purified, established their consciousness beyond the mind at a very high level through meditation, the sound perceived by them in that state was called mantra.
The rishis had the experience of mantra at three different levels, or planes of consciousness. When the consciousness passes from the gross body into the subtle body, the sound perceived at that time falls under one group. The mantras heard in the subtle body form another group, and when the consciousness enters from the subtle or second body into the third body, mantras realized at that time form a third group.

Different levels of consciousness

We need to understand what is meant by first body, second body and third body. When I say ‘body’, I do not mean only the body form, but body consciousness – that body through which the consciousness is functioning. When the body consciousness is realized through the medium of the five gross senses, it is called gross body consciousness or the first body where the mind, intellect and memory are working.
What is the second body? When you practise meditation, your awareness travels deep inside, and in that inner realm you begin to see beautiful visions and dreams. The second body, therefore, is not something tangible. It is the subtle or astral body, sukshma sharira, psychic consciousness, or the subconscious body. That is the second plane of consciousness.
What is the third body? When meditation becomes deeper and deeper, the state of void or shoonya arises. There is no awareness of the external or the internal. It is the experience of the dark night of the soul, like midnight, formless, sightless, where there is no awareness of ‘I’. That is called the third body, the causal body, karana sharira, or the unconscious body. In the Vedas it has been called hiranyagarbha, the golden womb. There are many names given to it by psychologists also.
There is also a fourth level of consciousness which is transcendental. In the third and fourth levels of consciousness, awareness of the external world is absent. There is no awareness of one’s old name or form, but there is the experience of the eternal self, akhanda swaroopa. This is the fourth level of consciousness called samadhi or turiya.
All these different levels of consciousness have been indicated in the Gayatri mantra: Om bhur, Om bhuvah, Om swahah, Om mahah, Om janah, Om tapah, Om satyam, Om tat savitur varenyam bhargo devasya dheemahi dhiyo yo nah prachodayat. ‘Om bhur’ is the first body, bhur loka or the material plane; ‘Om bhuvah’ is the second body, the intermediate or astral plane; ‘Om swahah’ is the third body, the heavenly or divine plane. The mantras that follow indicate the fourth body – mahah loka, janah loka, tapah loka and satya loka. These are not material worlds, they are planes of consciousness.

Revealed sounds

As the rishis sat in meditation and reached higher levels, they received the sounds known as mantra. Mantras, therefore, are not a creation of the human mind. They were perceived from higher sources. In Islam it is said that the Koran was revealed by God, which means that whoever received the Koran had attained a very high yogic state. In the same way, Christians speak of the Bible as a revealed scripture. Sanatana dharma, the eternal vedic religion, too is understood as having been revealed. The Vedas were not written by man. This, however, does not mean that the pen that wrote them was held in God’s hand; it only means that they were revealed to rishis in the transcendental state. The same is said about the Ramacharitamanas.

Bija mantras

Of all the types of mantra explained so far, the first and the highest is Om. Om is the seed or bija mantra of all mantras. The rishis realized this cosmic Om in the very highest planes of consciousness, in the state of self-realization, atma sakshatkar. All the mantras in existence have come from Om. It is composed of three sounds – A, U and M. Om is found in all societies and all religions, in one form or another. Om is the foremost of mantras.
First comes Om and after it the mantras of Gayatri. The twenty-four syllables of Gayatri along with Om should be considered the original Gayatri mantra. The vedic rishis who received this mantra were established at a very high level of consciousness.
Thereafter, there are mantras pertaining to the third body or the unconscious body, also known as bija mantras. We call them bija or potential mantras, because they contain dormant, potential energy of different forces. Each power or force in the world has its own bija mantra, such as ‘Aim’ for Saraswati, ‘Shreem’ for Lakshmi, ‘Kleem’, ‘Kreem’, ‘Hreem’, and so on. All the short, seemingly meaningless mantras you might have heard are bija mantras.
The bija mantras are like little bombs, like time bombs that explode just at the right moment. Just as you plant a seed in the earth and from that a giant tree grows up to give thousands of fruits, the bija mantras contain similar power. With the practice of anushthana, prolonged mantra repetition for a fixed period of time and a specific number of malas, and regular sadhana, the power of the mantra is awakened. When that power is awakened, the consciousness takes the form of the mantra. That’s when the real work of the mantra begins.

Power of mantra

There is much criticism of Hinduism, the objection being that it has a pantheon of gods and goddesses. But you must remember that shakti, energy, is not only of one type. It has innumerable forms. Although the primal shakti, the root shakti, is one, its manifestations are endless. That is why we worship Devi in so many different forms.
The same principle is also found in science. When electricity is flowing from one central circuit, the amplifier, tape-recorder and all other appliances work. The same energy gives heat from the heater and coolness from the fan. The heat and the cold are varied manifestations of one energy. The truth is that shakti is not just of one kind. Intellect is one shakti, memory is another shakti, speech, prana and knowledge are all shaktis without which we cannot exist. That is why there are different bija mantras for awakening these different powers.
Take vidya shakti, the power of knowledge. It is perceived in the form of Saraswati. I am not talking of the goddess Saraswati whose idol is worshipped in the temple, but of the energy which is in the form of vidya or Saraswati. What is the way to awaken this energy? Of all the methods given, the best is to take the bija mantra of that shakti and awaken its sleeping potential.
There are many other types of shaktis pertaining to the body, to disease, even to snake poison. In many diseases, if japa anushthana or prolonged repetition of Mahamrityunjaya mantra: Om tryambakam yajaamahe sugandhim pushtivardhanam; urvaarukamiva bandhanaan mrityormuksheeya maamritaat, is performed, the power of the mantra is awakened internally, giving the desired result. By the practice of mantra japa, the aspirant’s conscious will is awakened and through willpower everything is accomplished.
There are two forces or powers in the mantra. One is the power of consciousness, Shiva or purusha. The other is the force of nature, matter or prakriti. Through sadhana, these two forces are awakened, and when awakened, they continue to help you throughout your life. Now, you must try to bring the science of mantra into your life.
